The Definition of Success and How to Be Successful

â€Å"Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome†, Booker T. Washington, spoke that success is not measured in the riches and status of a person, but by the hard work and commitment they made to reach their goals while conquering challenges along the way. Washington states a brilliant point, although there are others who would disagree, instead viewing materials as a measurement of success. Since when did success start being acquisitively measured? Modern day society has force fed people- through television, social media, and iconic celebrities- that being successful has all to do with the materialistic items, luxuries, money and fame that a person has. On the†¦show more content†¦Through her difficult childhood, Oprah became a courageous woman, who went on to pursue her dreams by earning herself a scholarship to Tennessee State University. Her career then started, beginning as a news an chor and now owning her own television network OWN. She has given back to thousands of people with her television show The Oprah Winfrey Show and her school for girls in South Africa Oprahs Leadership Academy. She is an icon to millions of people all over the world for her generous and philanthropic personality. Life handed Oprah strenuous and unpleasant obstacles in her early years, but through conquering these obstacles and dedicating her life to what she believes in, she has become an icon of success. Another ideal example would be renowned actor, Johnny Depp. Depps is known for his prosperous acting career starring in award winning movies such as Titanic, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Sweeney Todd. He holds fame and luxuries most people can only dream of, but he is not a successful man for being famous, he is successful for the challenges he has faced and fought on his journey to the big screen. Depp was born in Owensboro, Kentucky as the youngest of four children. To accommoda te his fathers job as a civil engineer, the family was forced to move frequently, making a stable childhood for Depp impossible.
